Environmental education is a key aspect in biodiversity conservation and environmental protection; however, the population does not always have access to it or they are not interested when information is available. Dissemination is often limited, not focused properly or the content has no impact on people who make use of natural resources. The limited or lack of information sometimes causes these people to make decisions that affect and deteriorate wildlife and biodiversity.
The lack of knowledge about the importance of conserving biodiversity for the wellbeing and health of the population causes the deterioration of ecosystems services and the waste of natural resources, creating negative consequences in the medium and long term sustainability of the population.
In this sense, it is necessary to implement environmental education projects that are comprehensive, robust, properly disseminated and involve both children and youth and the local productive sector. Children and youth should be taught the relevance of caring for biodiversity for their own well-being and for the community. On the other hand, the local community has to understand that environmentally friendly productive practices are more beneficial and ensure in the long term the availability of the natural resources on which they depend for subsistence.
